Our weekly meetings are on Tuesdays at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate at 7.00 for 7.30pm
If you would like to join us you’ll be most welcome. Just email the Secretary at Secretary@rotaryharrogatebrigantes.org.uk before 9.00am on the preceding day.
About our Meetings
We have a meal at 7.30pm and that is usually followed by a speaker. We have a wide range of contributors. Some are fellow Rotarians, usually but not always from other clubs; we also welcome speakers from partner organisations, local charitable groups and national and international operations as well as people who make a special contribution to the life of the area.
Interesting Speakers
Recently we’ve heard about Mercy Ships, York Minster, social media and the Harrogate Homeless Project. Our speakers have included the two sixth-formers we sponsored for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, the former leader of Harrogate Council, the late Queen’s chef, a Rotary Peace Fellow, The Founding Director of the Big Bamboo Marketing Agency and a local young woman studying music at the prestigious Chetham’s in Manchester (we bought her a trumpet). Get the picture?
Other Meetings
We usually meet in the evening but occasionally we vary things by having a lunch. Recently we’ve been to Horticap on the outskirts of Harrogate and The George at Wormald Green between Harrogate and Ripon which boasts a fine carvery. We’ve also established a link with Harrogate Bowling Club and a couple of times a year they allow us onto their hallowed turf (under supervision) and then we round off the evening with fish and chips. Talking of which, our visits to Graveley’s fish and Chip restaurant in Harrogate usually go down a treat.
Social events
Apart from our weekly meetings we also have a variety of other social events. The two major annual celebrations are our Christmas Dinner – usually with a large helping of festive music – and our Charter Night, usually held in April. Charter Night is essentially the Rotary Club’s birthday. Brigantes was granted its charter in April 1980 so each year we celebrate it with partners, a speaker and lots of guests from other clubs. We in turn are invited to similar celebrations at neighbouring clubs.
Visits
We also have occasional day visits. Over the years we’ve taken in a variety of venues ranging from Sunderland’s National Glass Centre and Stadium of Light to the Saint-Gobain glass factory at Eggborough and the Allerton Waste Recovery Park alongside the A1. So plenty of variety there!
