Harrogate Brigantes Rotary
Good friends working together to help communities at home and abroad
A volunteer in all of us
There was a time when volunteering was something you did when you retired. Not now. Today it’s something that’s embraced by young and old as the all-round benefits become clear. And Rotary is at the forefront of it all.
The benefits of volunteering
Well of course it’s obvious that someone will benefit from us giving our time. We volunteer in Harrogate and further afield in order to help others – people and groups in need, worthwhile causes and the community.
Immense satisfaction
Volunteers speak of the immense satisfaction they get from doing something simply for the sake of it, of helping others not because they get paid for it, but because they give their time willingly for something they feel passionately about.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
Winston Churchill
Enriches our lives
Make no mistake; volunteering is good for us. It enriches our lives, it familiarises us with the community, it connects us to people and ideas which can influence us and help us to develop as people.
Meeting and working with lots of new people and making new friends is good for our health both physically and mentally.
Many companies, recognising these benefits, devote a section of their budgets to CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) . It not only shows they are company which cares; it also shows they want to enable their staff to enjoy the benefits of volunteering.
We can all bring our passion and skills to volunteering
We may be able to use skills we didn’t even know we had – being a good listener, getting things done, being a team player, while at the same time learning new skills, knowledge or experience from people we work alongside.
When we talk about donations we usually think about money. But donating our time can be just as important.
Rotary’s motto is ‘Service above Self’ and it’s that passion to serve and to give back that lies at the heart of what we do.
