Harrogate Hospital Radio – A Talk by Bernard Mageean

January 28, 2025

Bernard Mageean is Chairman of Harrogate Hospital Radio. Founded in 1977 in the days of vinyl and turntables, it now has 50 members and 30 presenters, broadcasts on 95.3m FM, is regulated by Ofcom and is a registered charity. It’s staffed by what Bernard calls “a bunch of enthusiastic amateurs” who have nevertheless won awards and even have their own app.

Bernard plans for the future

Their studio looks very impressive but, such is the pace of technology that it’s already out of date. It needs a complete upgrade and a new approach to programming which, as Bernard told us, he and his committee are keen to implement. But it needs money. Anyone who’s been in hospital, and that’s most of us, knows how important the hospital radio is. We’ve already provided HHR with a new transmitter from our legacy and it would be great to give them another helping hand so that together we can cheer up the patients on our wards.
