Pop-up Charity Cafe at St. Peters Church in aid of Polio +

Brigantes organised another Cafe at St. Peter’s Church, Harrogate, on Saturday, 2nd November, and it was well supported.  The proceeds amounted to £451 net, and the charity we supported this time was “End Polio Now”.  Every donation helps us to obtain the support, transport, and materials needed in the fight against this disease.  All donations are matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling the amount we have raised!

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years, and our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.  As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we’ve reduced polio cases by 99.9 per cent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.

Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but it is crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free.  If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
